Not out of curiosity, but to answer a very practical question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When is a good time to actively search for suitable IP talent \u2014 and when is competition particularly intense?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide has-text-align-left\"><strong><u><strong>Our \u201cBarometer\u201d: kandidatentreff.de<\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">As an indicator, we used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kandidatentreff.de\" id=\"www.kandidatentreff.de\" target=\"_self\">www.kandidatentreff.de\n<\/a> \u2014 a website that has been well established within the German IP community for many years. Since most relevant job postings in Germany also appear there, trends in the number of listings provide a good indicator of overall market conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We analyzed three role profiles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patent attorneys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patent attorney candidates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Administrative and office staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\"><strong><u><strong>A Clear Decline Across All Three Groups<\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Across all categories, a clear trend emerges:\nThe number of job postings published simultaneously on kandidatentreff.de has declined significantly in every role profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-1024x612.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-1024x612.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-1536x917.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534-18x12.png 18w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182534.png 1748w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among patent attorneys and patent attorney candidates, a clear decline can be observed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2023, there were 44 job postings for patent attorneys and 36 job postings for patent attorney candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2024, the numbers had fallen to 32 job postings for patent attorneys and 23 job postings for patent attorney candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2025, the figures declined further to 30 job postings for patent attorneys and 19 job postings for patent attorney candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By February 2026, only 14 positions for patent attorneys and 11 positions for patent attorney candidates were advertised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-1024x553.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-1024x553.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-768x415.png 768w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-1536x829.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-2048x1106.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.wmw-patent.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-09-182549-1-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar picture emerges for office staff: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2023, 80 positions for office staff were advertised, decreasing to 59 in April 2024 and 50 in April 2025. By February 2026, only 30 positions for office staff remained advertised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong><u>In short:<\/u><\/strong> The market appears noticeably \u201cquieter\u201d today than it did three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide has-text-align-left\"><strong><strong><strong><u><strong><strong>What Could Be Behind This Development?<\/strong><\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is likely no single explanation. Rather, a combination of factors may be contributing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Economic uncertainty in Germany:<\/strong> In a weak economic environment, budgets at many industrial companies are planned more cautiously \u2013 including external spending (e.g., advice\/consulting). Law firms may also feel this \u2013 and positions are consequently refilled more cautiously or less frequently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>AI tools are changing workflows:<\/strong> Many work steps can now be supported or partially automated. At the same time, it is still unclear how quickly and to what extent this development will continue in IP practice. This uncertainty can lead to restraint in new hiring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\"><strong><strong><strong><u><strong><strong><strong>What Does This Mean for Smaller Law Firms?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If fewer positions are advertised overall, this can represent a genuine opportunity for smaller firms: good candidates are less heavily courted \u2014 and more open to alternatives beyond the \u201cusual suspects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An additional advantage of smaller, established law firms lies in what many candidates value more strongly in uncertain times: continuity and stability.
